Swavesey girls compete in the first ever YDP GIRLS CUP football tournament

A great day competing in the first GIRLS ONLY YDP Cup...

On Friday 12th June, six Year 6 and three Year 4 girls headed off to Ramsey to compete in the first ever YDP football cup. The girls were thrilled this had been introduced, having seen the boys compete earlier in the year.

In the group stage, they played three matches and showed fantastic teamwork throughout. The opening game was a tight 0–0 draw against Robert Arkenstall, with both defences completely on top. The team followed this with a well‑earned 1–0 win over Fourfields, thanks to more excellent defending against a very strong side and a composed late finish from Bonnie.

The final group match saw the girls fall 2–0 behind to Great Wilbraham, but they responded with real determination. A strong fightback brought the score to 2–1, and although they pushed hard for an equaliser, time ran out. Their efforts secured a second‑place finish in the group, sending them into the Trophy Tournament – the tougher of the two knockout tournaments.

In the quarter‑final, the girls produced one of their best performances of the day, winning 2–0. Millie fired a brilliant low strike into the bottom corner after a clever ball forward, and Lila’s ambitious long‑range effort took a deflection to seal the victory. Their run came to an end in the next round with a 2–0 defeat to the eventual winners, Fourfields, but the team battled right to the final whistle.

Every player showed resilience, teamwork and real pride in representing the school. A huge well done to all nine girls – they should be incredibly proud of themselves.

Mr O'Neill

A big thank you to Mr O'Neill, for running the football club all year, and for accompanying the team, along with Ms Pipe.
