Year 6 Runners-Up and 'Spirit of the Games' winners at the SCSSP 'Quick Sticks' Hockey Tournament 2025

A proud and productive morning for the Year 6s!
On a chilly and dull Tuesday 11th February, a squad of Year 6s travelled to Wilberforce Road Athletics Ground to take part in the SCSSP 'Quick Sticks' Hockey tournament.
Teams playing were 4 a-side, with 2 boys and 2 girls playing each time on rotation. The children played 4 matches in the first round. The first match was against The Meadow and although nervous about the first game, Swavesey triumphed in a 2-1 win.
On to the second match against Bassingbourn 1, with a jubilant 4-1 win! The third game was a 1-0 win against Trumpington Park and our final game ended in a very close 0-0 draw with Pendragon.
The teams then excitedly waited to find out which division they would qualify for in Round 2, and it was Division 1, so the children were very happy!
Our first game was against the overall winners, Histon Brook, who we lost 4-0 to, but it was a good match. On to the next, with a close 2-1 win against Waterbeach, our final match was a 1-1 draw against Bassingbourn 2.
Swavesey were thrilled to be announced RUNNERS-UP overall out of 20 teams in the tournament. To add to the proud mood, Swavesey were also awarded with the 'Spirit of the Games' award for great teamwork and passion. A special mention was made, by another school, to 'Parker' for honesty and fair play, over a contentious decision, so well done to him.
Here are some comments from the team:
Tilly: I liked playing in a team and know that I am a good defender and team player. I felt happy and excited all morning.
Parker: I thought it was really enjoyable because everybody was really kind, and it was a great experience. I learnt that teamwork makes the dream work and to stay positive. I was very happy and exhausted (in a good way) at the end.
Hannah: I learnt that I shouldn't quit and keep going. I felt happy and excited.
Nicholas: I felt proud when I scored a goal and learnt that to be in a team, you need to work together.
Alice A: Everybody was nice and encouraging, and I'm better at hockey than I thought. I felt proud and happy.
Moses:I liked the friendly teams and enjoyed the hockey matches. I felt excited about playing.
What a fabulous morning for the children. Thank you to Mrs Durant and Mrs Howard for accompanying the children to the event.
Certificates will be presented in Thursday's sports assembly after half term.
