English Challenge Final 2025

Swavesey Primary School were invited to take part in the 'English Challenge' final on Wednesday 2nd April.

It is an annual tournament, pitting school's in Cambridgeshire against each other, completing tricky challenges and working as a team to prove their English knowledge.

We  earned our place in the final by winning our heat last month.

Sadly though, Agnes, who played a huge part in helping us win the heat in St.Ives, was not able to join us for the final.

Fortunately, we were able to replace her with the equally strong Alice, who bravely stepped in to replace her.

We left school at about 14:05 and then walked from Swavesey to Over with Mr O’Neil and Mrs Sprawson leading the way. For the first of the exceptionally hard challenges, we had to show our knowledge on authors, poets and books - I think we did incredibly well. Then we had the penultimate challenge which was the quick thinks, where we split into duos: Jesse and Bertie took charge of the quick thinks and Alice and Rumi navigated the room, finding clues for the name of a character from a book. Sadly, we couldn’t figure the character out.

Then we entered the next hall - it was a lot more cramped than the first room. A time restriction was set for this one - we had eighteen minutes to finish eight papers. We ended up finishing seven papers and answering many questions! I think we did fantastically well. Even though we didn’t finish every paper, we were careful with the questions that were on there and we didn’t rush them.

We then had a five-minute break for the judges to mark our papers. Then we came back in, ready to find out our results. Each school was then called up to collect their finalists’ certificates, before the announcement of the winners.

We came third 🥉 in the end, which made us very proud.

Congratulations to Trumpington Park for winning 🏆

We would certainly recommend the experience to the year 5s next year
