SCSSP 'BIG SCHOOLS' CROSS COUNTRY 2026

A morning full of sunshine and excitement at the Wimpole Estate.

On Wednesday 14th October, eight teams of Year 3–6 children travelled to the annual South Cambs School Sports Partnership 'Big Schools' Cross Country event, at the Wimpole Estate.

On a lovely sunny autumnal day, over 1000 runners from 24 South Cambs primary schools took on the 1-mile loop, which went out around the beautiful parkland before finishing in front of the impressive Wimpole house.

Pupils from Years 3 to 6 raced in 8 separate races, boys and girls for each year group, with all Swavesey runners successfully completing the course, with fantastic personal positional achievements, especially as there was an average of 130 runners in each race!

The overall team results were as follows (only schools that had entered a team for all four races could qualify for the team competition): YEAR 5 / 6 Swavesey Team: 6th PLACE overall and YEAR 3 / 4 Swavesey Team: 5th PLACE overall. Well done to you all, for such great effort all round. I know some of you were grimacing at the finish line when I met you, but you made it!

The ‘Spirit of the Games Awards’ recognised exceptional determination and resilience, with one winner from each school receiving a free National Trust Family Pass, thanks to the generosity of the National Trust. The WINNER of the family pass at Swavesey was YEAR 5 Jack B, many congratulations!

The event was made possible thanks to sports studies students from Cambridge Regional College, who marshalled the route with professionalism, and the Sports Leaders from Bassingbourn & Comberton Village Colleges, who managed the start and finish areas and acted as tail runners.

I think everybody from Swavesey had a great morning, running and supporting their peers. The whole school is very proud of you all. Thank you to Mr O’Neill and Mrs Gladwell for supporting the event too.
